Prior Learning Assessment provides students with the opportunity to earn college credit for knowledge and skills gained through work experience, military training, industry-recognized credentials, apprenticeships, third-party providers, and other experiential learning opportunities. Recognizing prior learning helps students save time and money, reduce duplication of learning already achieved, strengthens enrollment pipelines, and accelerates completion toward certificates and degrees.
As student and workforce needs continue to evolve, and more learners seek flexible pathways to education and career advancement, PLA has emerged as an increasingly important strategy for advancing student success, strengthening workforce alignment, and supporting strategic enrollment goals at higher education institutions nationwide.
In preparation for the fall campaign, the district will host a series of information sessions, engagement opportunities, and training workshops throughout the summer for faculty, staff, advisors, evaluators, and other key stakeholders. These sessions are designed to help college teams prepare for an anticipated increase in PLA inquiries and requests while ensuring students receive consistent guidance and support across the district.
The summer sessions will focus on:
- Increasing awareness of PLA opportunities and benefits
- Reviewing PLA processes, regulations, and available assessment methods
- Preparing college evaluators and student support teams
- Sharing best practices for incorporating PLA into advising and recruitment
- Strengthening collaboration across colleges and departments
- Supporting workforce and transfer pathway initiatives
